The Studio

A practice built slowly, one house at a time.

ATELIER NOIR was founded in Milan in 2011 by a small group of architects who shared one conviction: a house should be drawn from the light that crosses it, not from a style.

We still work in a small team. Every project is led by a partner from the first site visit to the day the keys are handed over, so the idea that begins the drawing is the idea that finishes the building.

Our clients are families, developers and hoteliers who want a place to last. We say no to most briefs, so that we can give the few we accept the time they deserve.

Architectural detail of a lime plaster wall in raking light

Fourteen years

  1. 2011

The studio opens in a former stone workshop in Milan with three architects and one commission.

  2. 2014

First house completed on the Ligurian coast. Our approach to lime and stone takes shape.

  3. 2017

Interior architecture joins the practice, so joinery and surfaces are drawn with the building.

  4. 2019

First hospitality project, a small hotel on a Greek island, and our first international award.

  5. 2021

Landscape integration becomes a discipline of its own, working beside the architects from day one.

  6. 2023

Casa Solenne is completed in Puglia and Terra House in Tasmania, bringing the studio to twelve countries.

  7. 2025

Forty-two projects built, eighteen awards received, and a waiting list we keep deliberately short.

Five principles

01

Light

We study where the sun lands at dawn and where it leaves at dusk, then place walls and openings to follow that path.

02

Material

Lime, stone, oak and bronze. A few honest materials, left to age and gather character.

03

Proportion

Rooms are measured against the body first. Ceilings, doors and thresholds are set by how a person moves through them.

04

Craft

Every joint is drawn and every detail is made by hands we know. We visit the workshop as often as the site.

05

Nature

The landscape is never an afterthought. House, garden and horizon share one geometry from the first sketch.
